Harnessing the power of biomass

Unlocking the potential of biomass  for renewable energy.

What is Biomass?

Biomass refers to organic materials derived from plants, animals, or waste products that can be converted into energy. Unlike fossil fuels, biomass is renewable and can be replenished through sustainable agricultural and forestry practices.

Biomass can be used for electricity generation, heat production, and even as biofuels for transportation.

Types of biomass:

Wood and agricultural residues – Sawdust, crop stalks, straw, and other forest waste and plant materials

Animal manure – A rich source of biogas

Algae – A promising feedstock for biofuel production

Waste products – Food waste, industrial waste, and municipal solid waste

Converting biomass to energy:

Biomass is converted into bioenergy using different technologies. At ReGenEarth we currently focus on two methods:

Combustion: Burning biomass to produce heat and electricity.

Anaerobic digestion: Using bacteria to break down organic matter to produce biogas.

Why biomass?

ReGenEarth focuses on Biomass initiatives,  because these technologies align with their commitment to renewable energy and Earth Circularity Principles.

In addition to generating energy, biomass processes provide several other valuable benefits, including biogas, heat, biochar, and digestate. Biogas is a renewable energy source for electricity and heat, while biochar acts as a carbon-rich soil enhancer. The digestate, a nutrient-rich byproduct, serves as a natural fertiliser, helping to enrich and improve soil health.

These outputs support sustainable energy production, effective waste management, and soil health, advancing a circular economy while reducing environmental impact.

The ‘BioPower’ processes

Biopower technologies convert renewable biomass fuels into heat and electricity using processes similar to those used with fossil fuels. There are three ways to release the energy stored in biomass to produce biopower: Traditional burning, Oxygen depleted burning (Pyrolysis) and bacterial decay (Anaerobic).

Wet anaerobic composting converts liquid organic waste into a renewable energy source in the form of ‘biogas,’ which contains methane and carbon dioxide for energy generation. In addition to biogas, the process produces a nutrient-rich byproduct known as ‘digestate.’ This stable, semi-solid material is ideal for use as a natural fertiliser, making it excellent for spreading on land to enhance soil health and support sustainable agriculture.

Pyrolysis of biomass produces several valuable outputs, including biochar, syngas, and bio-oil. Biochar, a carbon-rich solid, can be used to improve soil health and sequester carbon. The syngas, a mixture of gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane, can be used for renewable energy generation. Bio-oil, a liquid product, can be refined for use in various industrial applications. These outputs contribute to sustainable energy production, carbon management, and soil enhancement.

The benefits of biomass energy

Reduces carbon emissions

Biomass is carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide released during combustion is reabsorbed by plants during their growth cycle.

Provides renewable electricity production

Biomass power plants convert organic material into electricity, which can be used to power homes, businesses, and industries.

Supports sustainable practices & reduces waste

Recycles agricultural, industrial, and organic waste into sustainable energy. Reducing the environmental burden of landfills and promoting a circular economy.
