What is Blu-Methane?
Blu-Methane (Sol-Blu CH4) offers a revolutionary approach to clean energy by harnessing methane from the world’s water resources, reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Blu-Methane is found in aquatic environments, such as oceans, lakes, and reservoirs, where it is naturally produced by the decomposition of organic matter. This methane often exists in the form of dissolved gas or methane hydrates — ice-like structures found under high-pressure, low-temperature conditions in deep waters. and interestingly large amounts are sequestered in Anaroibic Digestation slurry (digestate).
The benefits of Blu-Methane energy
Blu-Methane is a game-changer in the quest for sustainable energy. Capturing methane from the world’s water resources prevents a potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere while converting it into a clean, efficient fuel.
This dual benefit helps combat climate change and supports the global transition to renewable energy. With its potential to reduce emissions and provide a reliable energy source, Blu-Methane is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
RGE, through innovative technology and a strong commitment to sustainability, is paving the way in developing advanced Blu-Methane extraction systems. By designing efficient, eco-friendly methods to capture methane from water resources, RGE minimises environmental impact while maximising energy potential.
With a focus on reducing emissions and supporting the global shift toward renewable energy, RGE is leading the charge in sustainable methane recovery.
RGE undertook the world's first Proof of Concept trial in a live system working with the technology start-up Bluemethane. The system was installed at our Isle of Wight site (Buttercup), where we ran live methane extraction for 3 months to validate the net-zero energy use of the Bluemethane technology and the route to near-live methane abatement.
The process of retrieving blue methane from water involves several key steps designed to efficiently capture methane while minimising environmental impact.
First, methane is identified in aquatic environments where it forms naturally through the decomposition of organic matter under low-oxygen conditions.
Specialised extraction systems are then deployed to safely release and capture the methane. In the case of dissolved methane, degassing technologies are used to separate the gas from the water. For methane hydrates, controlled depressurisation or thermal stimulation techniques are applied to release the methane without destabilising the surrounding ecosystem.
Once extracted, the methane undergoes purification that ensures it meets energy-grade standards. The purified blue methane can then be compressed and stored for use as a clean, efficient fuel source. This process not only provides renewable energy but also helps mitigate climate change by preventing methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere.
