Lennox & Elk Fork, Kentucky: Turning coal into a climate opportunity
The transition away from coal is one of the defining challenges of our time. At ReGenEarth, we believe the solution must be practical, fair and economically viable — and Lennox & Elk Fork demonstrates exactly that. In partnership with the project developer CRR this initiative is demonstrating how coal can be transformed into a climate-positive asset.
Rather than simply closing mines, our approach creates opportunities for workers, communities, and the climate. No need for Policy, lectures or subsidising a solution. We can replace the power difference with circularity systems that will be built in Kentucky, operated in Kentucky and only use materials in Kentucky
By keeping coal reserves underground and generating high-integrity carbon credits, Lennox & Elk Fork prevents millions of tons of CO₂ from ever entering the atmosphere. This is carbon avoidance at the source — measurable, permanent and impactful. The credits fund every stage of the process, from mine closure to sustainable redevelopment, creating a self-sustaining cycle that enables the next project.
The project sits on a 200-acre site in Kentucky, with 90 acres previously mined. In 2024, the mine was closed as part of a bold initiative to turn coal into a climate-positive asset. Over 40 million tons of coal were assessed in the seams, with 34.5 million tons designated for permanent sequestration, resulting in 84.3 million tons of CO₂ effectively locked away forever. This single project ensures that, post-mitigation reductions, leakage calculations and safety buffers, 17.3 million minted and retireable carbon credits are available for sale.
34.5 million tons of coal measured
84.3M tons of CO2 sequestered
17.3M minted carbon credits available
ReGenEarth’s model ensures that mine owners receive fair compensation, workers are supported in transitioning to new roles, and local communities retain economic activity. Former mining sites are transformed into hubs for sustainable energy and the circular economy, showing that leaving coal in the ground can deliver more long-term value than burning it.
Lennox & Elk Fork is just the beginning. ReGenEarth and project developer CRR are working with industry, finance, and government partners to scale this approach globally, creating a roadmap in which climate ambition, economic opportunity, and community well-being go hand in hand.
Key Elk Fork highlights:
- 200-acre site with 90 acres previously mined
- Over 34.5 million tons of coal are permanently sequestered
- 17.3 million carbon credits generated
- 84.3 million tons of CO₂ sequestered for 100+ years
This isn’t theory; the work has begun, and Lennox and Elk Fork shows that a just transition for mining communities is possible, delivering positive, measurable climate impact while building the next generation of sustainable infrastructure.
Real power, with real purpose.
If you are interested in supporting the transition through high-integrity carbon credits, ReGenEarth and project developer CRR welcome the opportunity to speak with you. Together, we can ensure that the most valuable coal is the coal that never gets burned.
