We’re breaking new ground and taking a step toward circular energy systems. ReGenEarth, in collaboration with Bluemethane, has launched Stephanie, the first methane abatement system of its kind to be installed at a biomass site.
Built in line with ReGenEarth’s Earth Circularity Principles, Stephanie is more than an innovation; it’s a bold move toward a regenerative future where waste becomes resource, and emissions become opportunity.
Turning emissions into innovation
Biomass energy, while often seen as a green alternative, can emit trapped methane, a greenhouse gas over 34 times more potent than CO₂ over 100 years. Traditional systems struggle to account for or contain these ‘hidden emissions,’ leaving a significant climate impact unaddressed.
We recognised this gap and partnered with Bluemethane, a leader in methane capture technology, to deploy a system that would not only detect but harvest and repurpose methane from the biomass process itself.
Stephanie, affectionately named ‘Harvey’s Big Sister’ (a nod to a previous prototype), is a bespoke methane capture unit engineered specifically for ReGenEarth’s biomass operations. The key features of the unit are:
- Advanced methane harvesting: Captures methane that would otherwise be lost in biomass breakdown.
- Data-driven measurement: Provides quantifiable insights into methane recovery and emission reduction.
- Integrated design: Can be built into existing biomass infrastructure without disrupting flow or efficiency.
- Scalable framework: A model that can be replicated across multiple ReGenEarth sites in the UK.
Stephanie is already delivering measurable environmental and systemic benefits. By turning hidden emissions into quantifiable impact, she captures and repurposes methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This not only transforms waste gas into a usable resource but also significantly reduces greenhouse gases at the source.
Most importantly, Stephanie serves as a proof of concept for how circular technology can be scaled across the UK. The first step in a national rollout of methane abatement across ReGenEarth’s renewable energy network.
Behind the technology: Bluemethane’s role
Bluemethane brought deep technical expertise and cutting-edge R&D to the table. Their modular system design allowed Stephanie to be customised for the unique conditions of ReGenEarth’s biomass site on the Isle of Wight. Their commitment to scalable climate tech aligns perfectly with ReGenEarth’s regenerative mission.
With Stephanie fully operational, ReGenEarth is now evaluating additional sites for system deployment.
Stephanie symbolises more than methane abatement. She represents a shift, a transition from linear processes to regenerative, circular models. Together, ReGenEarth and Bluemethane are proving that when innovation meets purpose, nothing needs to be wasted, and everything can have value.
That’s Power with Purpose.
